Ski Resorts

Ski Resorts

It all starts with a vision for a new ski resort. To implement this vision, in a first step ILF draws up a concept with a comprehensive master plan. This plan is based on an integrated planning and design approach that takes into account all technical-economic and all social-ecological aspects of a ski resort. After submitting a permit application design that meets all legal framework conditions, completing the permitting process and reaching a positive investment decision, the ski resort is implemented in several stages, taking a comprehensive approach which reflects all facets of tourism.

ILF assists clients in all stages, from the tender design with subsequent detailed design, to procurement and assistance during construction, and finally commissioning of all facilities and buildings. ILF also offers support during operation.

ILF Consulting Engineers offers clients all required planning and design services for ski resorts in-house.

ILF’s extensive portfolio of services enables the company to render all design services, from master planning to construction and commissioning with its own specialist departments. This allows ILF to reduce interfaces between the respective specialist designers and to ensure that technically complex projects are executed smoothly.

At the client’s request ILF also manages and coordinates project teams with external designers.

In addition to the know-how needed for providing all design services for technically demanding projects, ILF has many years of experience in handling particularly challenging authority requirements.

Since the establishment of the alpine engineering department in 2002 that evolved through the cooperation with the engineering company of Dr. Wechsler, ILF Consulting Engineers has predominantly been serving operators of premium ski resorts in the Alps. ILF is increasingly attracting clients from emerging ski nations by delivering planning and design services for snow-making systems.

Together with Dr. Wechsler, an internationally recognized pioneer in the design and implementation of large-scale snow-making systems, ILF draws on more than 35 years of experience in the design, construction supervision and commissioning of snow-making systems.

Optimization of Energy and Operation Efficiency of Snow-Making Systems

  • Hydraulic Simulations
  • Secondary Use of Snow-Making Infrastructure for Hydropower Generation and as Energy Storage

On the basis of this experience and with the aim of significantly reducing the utilization of resources needed for snow-making systems, ILF has developed hydraulic software that, for the first time, makes it possible to model and then simulate snow-making systems in real time.

To this end, a tried and tested hydraulic software tool used for the hydraulic design of large water transmission systems in the Arab region was further developed to be utilized especially for snow-making systems. This software specifically developed by ILF, and the services that can be offered as a result, are unique on the market.

ILF is now able to simulate the entire hydraulic system with all components, such as pumps, filters, valves, and air, water and power lines with all tapping points and snow-making machines in real time throughout the snow-making period.

By analyzing diverse operating scenarios, optimization potential in terms of construction and operation can be identified and suitable improvement measures developed.

This allows operators to transport the right quantity of water at the right time to the right place while ensuring that energy is used efficiently and hydraulic conditions are optimized.

In most cases the costs of snow production per cubic meter can thus be significantly reduced.

Design of Ski Runs and Bike Trails

  • Path and Slope Construction
  • Drainage Systems
  • Protective and Supporting Structures

For the planning and design of ski runs two things are essential: overview and experience.

With 35 years of experience from diverse projects, and with an integrated planning and design approach ILF meets the exact requirements for the complete planning and design of ski runs. The planning and design not only makes it necessary to precisely coordinate the ski run capacities with the transport capacities of the associated ropeways but also to focus on the specific requirements of the respective ski resort and its strategic direction. Depending on the target groups of a ski resort and the existing topography, ski runs are designed for the respective level of difficulty and the optimum length and width.

ILF offers standard ski run design services for winter tourism around the globe as well as design services that contribute decisively to the economic success of summer tourism in alpine resorts. By designing bike trails and courses, ILF demonstrates its versatility of services for making alpine resorts more attractive during snow-free months.
