High Speed Two (HS2) – Phase One

HS2 is the UK’s new high-speed railway line that will connect London and Birmingham along a 225 km route. Enabling trains to travel at speeds of up to 360 km/h, this transformative project will improve rail travel across the West Midlands, London and the South East of England, with more services, faster journeys and fewer delays. The project includes more than 50 km of tunnels and the construction of four modern stations, which will serve as key transport hubs (London Euston, Old Oak Common, Interchange, and Birmingham Curzon Street). As HS2 approaches central London, the line will run entirely underground for more than 23 km in twin-bore tunnels excavated by six Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and will be connected by cross passages. The London tunnels will also include seven emergency and ventilation shafts with connecting adits. In addition, the approach to London Euston station will require the construction of large cross-section Sprayed Concrete Lining (SCL) tunnels to accommodate the increased number of tracks entering the station.
