In response to global trends and market expectations, ILF provides solutions in line with the 4th Generation District Heating and Cooling (4GDHC) concept of integrating smart thermal grids (which utilize centralized energy plants, renewables and low-temperature heat sources) into systems that optimize operational costs and minimize heat losses, with the help of heat and cold storage systems.

Based on the profound knowledge of heat generating plants such as Combined Heat and Power (CHPs) plants, Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plants and biomass-based installations, as well as on the vast experience with renewable energy sources and energy storage facilities that its engineers have, ILF offers comprehensive services focused on optimizing the overall efficiency of grids and radically reducing the emission of greenhouse gases and air, water and soil pollutants. These services comprise the design of entire district heating and cooling networks, the analysis and optimization of existing networks, and comprehensive services related to all components or subsystems of such grids.

  • Feasibility Study for the district heating network in the cities of Dushanbe, Khujand, Tursanzade and Varsob (Tajikistan) – main lines: approx. 125 km, distribution network: approx. 400 km, installed capacity: 1.200 MWth
  • City Cooling project in TownTown, Vienna – research projects incl. Conceptual Design for the network and planning implementation, 8 MWth cooling capacity, 1.5 km district cooling network
  • Fortum’s Zabrze CHP plant – EPCM Consultant for Conceptual Design, tender documentation and 3 MWth heat pump installation, waste heat recovery and heat transfer to district heating system
  • Białystok CHP plant – multi-conceptual technical and economic study on heat recovery systems and heat transfer to the city’s district heating system, with heat recovered from cooling water and/or biomass plant flue gases; recovered heat capacity: 40–50 MW, CAPEX and OPEX analysis
  • Sewage heat recovery system – multi-disciplinary conceptual design for heat recovery from municipal sewage system with a capacity of approx. 5–15 MWth
  • Extension of airport district cooling system – planning services for 30 MW cold capacity, compression chillers with low global warming potential refrigerants
